In this blog post I want to share an essay I wrote for a school assignment. The question was to Narrate your experiences during the COIVD-19 lockdown. I tilled my essay ‘OPPORTUNITY AND CHANGE – COVID 19’

My condolences to all those who have lost a loved one to covid-19 and appreciation to all the front line warriors in the fight against covid-19. Stay safe everyone.

Coronavirus disease, commonly known as COVID-19, is an infectious disease caused by the newly discovered coronavirus. The first case of COVID-19 was recorded in December of 2019 in the city of Wuhan, in China. The coronavirus disease quickly spread and became the global pandemic we all know today. The fast spread could be attributed to a lot of factors majorly ignorance by the government, because of their pockets, and uneducated citizens. I am constantly baffled by the fact that some people still believe that coronavirus does not exist, irrespective of the four hundred thousand people that have been killed by the virus.

I first found out about the coronavirus while I was in my University; the rules and regulations of the school makes it so that all students are disconnected from social media and stable internet connection is rare, due to this I had limited information about COVID-19. I never realized how severe the virus was until an announcement was made telling all the students to go to their various homes, due to the coronavirus global pandemic. When I heard the announcement, I was faced with mixed feelings, a part of me was glad about getting a break from school and another part was sad because of all the difficulties a lockdown would cause and the pain infected people will endure. After hearing the announcement, I decided to make the most of the lockdown and also get a proper rest for when school resumes.

On getting home from school I was really surprised by how everything has changed: wearing of face masks have become normal, the use of hand sanitizers has increased and personal hygiene is taken more seriously than ever. I embraced all these changes for my safety and for the safety of the people around me. Despite the changes I was still determined to make the best of the lockdown. Surprisingly the lockdown did not offer me the break from school I hoped for, but took me back to school in the form of online classes. Most students faced challenges with online classes mainly due to lack of strong internet connection or internet enabled devices. Personally, I enjoyed the online classes, even though I initial did not support it, it brought about a new method of learning which I licked and brought learning to the comfort of my bedroom.

The online classes as expected consumed a lot of time but I still made time to pursue other things. I improved my computer programming skills by learning new programming languages and taking on some projects. I was very happy when I completed a system I have been working on for about six months, I then realized that my major problem was lack of time which due to the lockdown I have excess of. Most importantly I made sure I relaxed, I binge watched several series on Netflix and watched various top-rated movies. During the lockdown I missed doing a lot of things: coding with my programmer friends, playing football, going to restaurants and going to the cinema; in spite of all these what I missed most was going to church even though there are online church programs they did not give me the same feeling of going to church to connect with God. To compensate for that I made a habit of praying every day for the frontline workers and those suffering from the disease.

In conclusion, the COVID-19 lockdown came to me as a surprise, with its good sides and bad sides but I am happy I made the most of my stay at home. It is also important that we all do our part to stop the spread of the virus for our own good and maintain some of the safety measures we learned even after the lockdown.
